Amazon has recently announced the discontinuation of its Astro for Business robot. This decision comes after the company initially gave indications that the Astro robot might pivot towards enterprise use by enhancing its capabilities as a camera-equipped patrol dog. However, Amazon has now made it clear that the Astro for Business robot will be permanently discontinued. This move signifies a strategic shift in focus towards the development of home robotics products. The company’s Vice President of Hardware Engineering has emphasized the need to concentrate resources on advancing the progress of home robotics, indicating that the development of consumer-oriented robotic solutions is a top priority.

Effective September 25th, all existing Astro for Business robots will cease to function, and Amazon will automatically issue full refunds to customers who purchased the $2,349.99 bot. Additionally, a $300 credit will be provided to affected customers. While Amazon has not disclosed the exact number of business robots sold since the launch in November 2023, it is evident that the company aims to prioritize the development of home robotics solutions. Customers who currently own the Astro for Business robot will not be able to convert it for home use. Instead, Amazon is offering a free shipping label for its recycling program, encouraging customers to participate in environmentally friendly disposal practices.

An internal memo from Amazon’s Lindo St. Angel highlights the decision to wind down the Astro for Business program in favor of focusing entirely on consumer robotics products for the home. The memo emphasizes the company’s commitment to leveraging generative AI technology and underscores the importance of aligning resources towards the development of innovative home robotics experiences. This strategic realignment reflects Amazon’s dedication to delivering cutting-edge solutions to its customers and signifies a shift towards future growth and product development.

Amazon has reached out to Astro for Business customers via email, informing them of the product discontinuation and refund process. Customers are assured of full refunds for their device purchases, with an additional $300 credit provided to support a replacement solution for their workplace. Existing customers are also offered the opportunity to join the Astro Day 1 Editions Program for home use. The email provides details on the discontinuation of device functionality, data deletion, and recycling options for the Astro for Business robot. Additionally, customers with Astro Secure subscriptions are notified of the changes to their service and subscription fee refunds.

Despite the discontinuation of the Astro for Business robot, Amazon continues to focus on the development of the Astro for Home robot. The consumer-focused robot remains an invite-only Day 1 Edition product, offering advanced features and functionalities. Speculations about a new version with conversational generative AI capabilities have surfaced, hinting at potential enhancements that could further elevate the in-home robotics experience. As Amazon navigates the competitive landscape of consumer robotics, the company remains committed to innovation and delivering premium robotic solutions to customers.
