Amazon MGM Studios is set to bring a new incarnation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes to Prime Video. This new series, titled Young Sherlock, will be executive produced and directed by Guy Ritchie, known for his work on the previous Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey, Jr. The series will feature Hero Fiennes Tiffin in the title role, presenting a younger and more raw version of the iconic detective.
Unlike the 1985 Young Sherlock Holmes film by Barry Levinson and Chris Columbus, this new series draws inspiration from Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novels. Young Sherlock will explore a new origin story for the character, showcasing him at the age of 19. The character is described as “disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed” as he delves into a murder case at Oxford University where he becomes one of the suspects. This leads Sherlock to uncover a global conspiracy that will forever change his life.
Guy Ritchie expressed his excitement for the project, stating that Young Sherlock will provide a fresh and exhilarating take on the detective that audiences have never seen before. The series aims to explore the enigmatic character, delving into what drives him and ultimately shapes him into the genius detective that is beloved by fans worldwide.
Hero Fiennes Tiffin, known for his roles in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and the After films, will be stepping into the shoes of the young Sherlock Holmes. His portrayal of a young Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has already captivated audiences, making him a fitting choice for this iconic role. Additionally, Matthew Parkhill will serve as the showrunner and executive producer for the series, ensuring that Young Sherlock delivers a compelling and captivating storyline.
Young Sherlock is set to have an eight-episode first season, with Prime Video yet to announce an official release date.
