At around 23km/h, the legs of the rider are spinning so quickly that the saddle starts to feel uncomfortable. While this may be fine for casual riding, it can be frustrating for those looking to travel at the bike’s top speed of 25km/h, as per European limits. Unlocking the motor for more speed is an option, but it can lead to challenges, particularly for riders accustomed to US speeds of 20mph.
Despite its performance quirks, the Engwe P20 manages to offer some redeeming features. The hydraulic disc brakes provide quick and controlled stops, while the geometry of the bike ensures stable steering, even with its heavier frame. The battery life is decent when using the pedal assist mode, offering a range of about 52km on a full charge. The bike also comes with added extras such as integrated fenders, a rear rack, and front and rear lights, making it suitable for city commuters.
One of the trade-offs of the Engwe P20 is its weight. While it may be heavy for a foldable bike with 20-inch tires, the added heft contributes to a more secure ride experience. However, this comes at the expense of portability, making it less convenient for commuters who need to carry their bikes onto trains or buses. The folding process, while advertised as quick and easy, may take some practice to perfect due to the strength required to secure the bike in its folded state.
One of the frustrations with budget e-bikes like the Engwe P20 is that they often feel like they were developed based on what components were available, rather than being optimized for the best riding experience. This lack of attention to detail can result in performance quirks and inconsistencies that may deter riders looking for a smooth and efficient commute. While the Engwe P20 may serve as a decent option for those on a budget, it falls short of being a great e-bike that truly enhances the riding experience.
