Recently, the popular battle royale game Fortnite announced that players will soon have the ability to hide certain emotes that are deemed “confrontational” by the developers. In addition to the “Laugh it up” emote, three others have also been classified as “confrontational” and will be subject to the new filtering option. These emotes include “Take the L”, a dance move featuring an L symbolizing loser, “Whipcrack”, a snapping whip animation, and “Make It Plantain”, an emote that showers bananas in a display of wealth. The common theme among these emotes seems to be their ability to evoke feelings of humiliation or suggestiveness.
The decision to allow players to hide confrontational emotes raises questions about the prevalence of toxic behavior in online gaming communities. Acts of taunting and humiliation, such as the infamous “teabagging” move in first-person shooters, can create a hostile environment for players. Even without the ability to speak to one another, players find ways to communicate provocatively through the use of emotes.
While the option to hide confrontational emotes may help reduce toxicity in Fortnite, it is not a foolproof solution to the problem. The underlying issue of negative player interactions persists, and it remains to be seen whether this feature will have a significant impact on improving the overall gaming experience. However, for those who have been affected by taunting and toxic behavior, the option to filter out certain emotes may offer some relief.
