Kia and Uber have recently announced a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the use of Kia’s newly unveiled PBV modular electric vehicles for ridehailing services. The PBV, which stands for Platform Beyond Vehicle, was first introduced during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. It is a family of electric vehicles built on a flexible vehicle architecture, allowing for various swappable body types. This innovative design enables the transformation of the vehicle from a minivan to a full-size van or even a small truck, depending on specific needs. While the driver cab remains fixed, the rest of the vehicle can be easily interchangeable, akin to a real-life Duplo set.
Among the various possibilities offered by the PBV concept, Kia has showcased the PV5, a midsized electric van designed specifically for ridehailing, delivery, and utilities. Uber aims to make the PV5 available as an option for its drivers, aligning with its commitment to transition to an all-electric fleet across all markets by 2040. This partnership with Kia will allow Uber to explore the optimal specifications for PBV models, encompassing further integration of technology and services to benefit drivers and ride-hailing users alike. The joint efforts between the two companies will encompass the development of proofs of concept, prototypes, and the production of PBVs tailored to the needs of Uber drivers.
Uber is facing mounting pressure from governments worldwide to increase the adoption of electric vehicles among its drivers in order to reduce tailpipe pollution and fight climate change. However, convincing hundreds of thousands of ridehail drivers to switch to electric vehicles is a complex task. According to Uber, more than 74,000 drivers in North America and Europe are already using electric vehicles. In a previous effort, Uber had entered into a deal with the UK-based startup Arrival to acquire its EVs. However, Arrival has since encountered financial difficulties, casting uncertainty on the fulfillment of that partnership.
