Nintendo recently confirmed that they are indeed working on developing the successor to the popular Nintendo Switch console. During a briefing for the financial year ending on March 31, 2024, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa hinted at several key details regarding the upcoming games system. He repeatedly referred to the new device as the “successor to the Nintendo Switch,” indicating that it will be an evolution of the current platform.

While the original Nintendo Switch saw a massive surge in sales during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nintendo faced new challenges with the global semiconductor shortage affecting production. However, Nintendo states that they do not anticipate similar issues with the launch of the Switch 2. Despite this, Nintendo’s current sales forecast for the financial year does not include projections for Switch 2 sales, although this might change in the future.

One of the reasons behind the delay in confirming the development of the Switch 2 was Nintendo’s concern that the announcement could have a negative impact on sales of the existing Switch consoles. Nintendo understands that the unveiling of the successor console will inevitably influence current sales, but they aim to strike a balance between generating new demand while maintaining sales for the current Switch systems.

For the 2023-2024 fiscal year, Nintendo reported a 12.6% decline in Switch hardware sales compared to the previous year. However, lifetime sales for the Nintendo Switch have reached an impressive 141.32 million units, with a staggering 1.235 billion games sold. Notably, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has become Nintendo’s best-selling game of all time. Additionally, Nintendo has announced plans to hold a Nintendo Direct in June, focusing on upcoming games for the second half of the year.

Nintendo has stated that they will gradually release more information about the Switch 2 in the lead-up to its launch, similar to their approach with previous hardware announcements. This strategy aims to build anticipation and excitement among fans while also managing sales effectively. Despite the upcoming release of the Switch 2, Nintendo remains committed to maximizing sales of the current Switch consoles and games in the coming fiscal year.

Nintendo’s confirmation of the Switch 2 development brings both excitement and challenges for the company. As they navigate through issues such as the global semiconductor shortage and potential impacts on current sales, Nintendo aims to maintain a delicate balance between old and new demand. With their proven track record of innovation and success, Nintendo fans can look forward to the evolution of the beloved Switch console into its highly anticipated successor, the Switch 2.
