The Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) regional finals for North America have been thrown into chaos after two players were hacked mid-game over the weekend. DarkZero’s GenBurten and TSM’s ImperialHal both fell victim to hacks during crucial matches, jeopardizing the integrity of the competition.

DarkZero’s GenBurten was the first to experience the hack, gaining the ability to see enemy players through walls during a match. Shortly after, TSM’s ImperialHal found himself unintentionally using aimbot, causing both players to express shock and disbelief at the situation. The incidents shed light on potential vulnerabilities in Apex Legends’ anti-cheat software, which may have been exploited by hackers.

The Anti-Cheat Police Department, a volunteer-run organization specializing in detecting and disrupting cheating in esports, commented on the situation on Twitter. They advised players to take measures to protect their personal information, such as changing passwords and reinstalling operating systems. The organization suspects that hackers used remote code execution (RCE) through Apex’s Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) to inject cheats into players’ PCs, raising concerns about the security of competitors’ machines.

In response to the hacking incidents and to maintain competitive integrity, the decision was made to postpone the North American regional finals of the ALGS. Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment released a statement confirming the postponement and promising to provide further information in the near future. The delay in the finals serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by esports organizations in combating cheating and maintaining fair competition in the industry.

Overall, the hacking scandal during the ALGS regional finals has sparked discussions about the effectiveness of anti-cheat measures in esports and the importance of protecting competitive integrity. As the esports industry continues to grow, ensuring a level playing field for all competitors will be crucial in maintaining the legitimacy and credibility of professional gaming tournaments.
