NASA recently confirmed that astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams may have to rely on a contingency plan to return home from the International Space Station (ISS) earlier than expected. The initial plan was for the astronauts to return aboard the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, but due to a series of setbacks, including thruster failures and helium leaks, this plan has been delayed. The crewed test flight of the Starliner was originally scheduled seven years ago, and the program has faced significant delays and cost overruns, making the situation even more complicated.
Boeing’s Setbacks
Boeing, the company behind the Starliner spacecraft, has been grappling with a series of setbacks and issues in recent times. The thruster failures and helium leaks experienced during the docking with the ISS have raised concerns about the safety of the vehicle. Tests conducted at NASA’s White Sands Test Facility revealed that deformed Teflon seals may have been a potential cause of the thruster failures. However, a final decision on whether the astronauts will return using the Starliner is not expected until mid-August. This uncertain situation has left Wilmore and Williams stuck in orbit for over two months, awaiting a resolution.
Backup Plan with SpaceX
In case the Starliner is deemed unsuitable for the astronauts’ return, SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission could provide a backup plan. The Crew-9 launch, which has been delayed as officials determine the next steps, could potentially bring Wilmore and Williams back to Earth in February of next year. NASA officials have stated that using the Starliner is still their preferred solution, but the contingency plan with SpaceX remains on the table. If the astronauts do end up returning with SpaceX, it would mark another setback for Boeing in a year that has already seen its share of challenges, including a door plug exploding during a flight and a criminal fraud charge.
The journey home for astronauts aboard the ISS has become unexpectedly complicated due to the challenges faced by the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.
