Further investigation into the source of the malware revealed connections to the Russian Federation. Parker speculated that the attackers might be attempting to establish a botnet or a spam email server using his compromised machine. Subsequent scans unveiled additional malware, including another trojan and a rootkit.
A Malwarebytes scan exposed the extent of the damage, with a total of eight malicious programs running on the machine, including four trojans, two backdoors, and a couple of adware applications. The situation escalated quickly, turning the machine into a complete and utter zombie under the control of cybercriminals.
