Creating a new class for a highly anticipated game like Diablo 4 is no easy task. Class designer Bjorn Mikkelson reveals that there were over 60 prototyped skills for the Spiritborn alone. While not every skill made it into the final version of the game, Mikkelson describes the process as “freeing” and “fun.” Some of the team’s personal favorite skills that didn’t make the cut could potentially make a return in the future. This experimental phase allowed them to try out “crazy stuff” and explore new possibilities for the Spiritborn class.
One of the new aspects of the Spiritborn class is the power of the centipede, which Mikkelson describes as a chance to try “strange and different things.” Unlike other classes in Diablo 4, the Spiritborn focuses on fear as an ability, offering a unique gameplay experience for players. The class also introduces a new blocking ability that goes beyond traditional shield mechanics. Mikkelson explains that the Vessel of Hatred class allows designers to approach blocking in a more active way, incorporating a martial arts-style blocking with hands instead of a shield. This dynamic approach adds a new layer of strategy to the Spiritborn’s gameplay.
While Diablo 4 already offered a variety of gameplay mechanics, the Spiritborn class adds a fresh perspective to familiar elements. By reimagining blocking as an active ability, Mikkelson and his team aim to create a more engaging and dynamic combat experience for players. The Vessel of Hatred DLC, which includes the Spiritborn class, is set to launch on October 9, offering players a new way to experience the world of Diablo 4.
