AMD has recently announced the release of the highly anticipated FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.1 (FSR) update, which brings significant improvements to the technology suite. This update includes an enhanced shader-based upscaler and decoupled frame generation, providing a noticeable boost in performance and better visual results for PC gamers. The update has been eagerly awaited by many in the gaming community, especially after the release of FSR 3.0 with the Radeon RX 7000-series GPU launch in November 2022.

One of the key features of FSR 3.1 is the improved shader algorithm for the upscaler. AMD claims that the new algorithm offers enhanced temporal stability, reduced flickering and shimmering, improved ghosting reduction, and better detail preservation compared to the previous system. This is a significant improvement over FSR 2.2, which while effective in increasing frame rates, sometimes fell short in terms of visual quality compared to Nvidia’s DLSS Super Resolution.

Performance Improvements in Games

Several popular Sony games, including Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and the two Spider-Man titles, have already been patched to support FSR 3.1. The improvements in these games are clearly visible, with the new upscaler providing a much better visual experience, particularly in scenes with rapid movements or detailed textures. Additionally, the introduction of a decoupled frame generator allows for greater flexibility in using different upscaling techniques with AMD’s frame generator, benefiting a wider range of graphics cards.

With the release of FSR 3.1, AMD has expanded support for Vulkan and the Xbox platform, making it easier for developers to integrate the technology into their games. This move is expected to increase the adoption of FSR 3.1 in future game releases, with more titles likely to utilize the updated technology to enhance the gaming experience for players. Additionally, AMD has announced that the software development kit (SDK) for FSR 3.1 will be publicly released next month, allowing developers to explore the changes made to the upscaler and further enhance the visual quality of the system.

The release of FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.1 marks a significant advancement in AMD’s upscaling technology, bringing improved visual quality and performance enhancements to a wide range of games. The updated shader algorithm and decoupled frame generator offer a more refined upscaling experience, making it a compelling choice for PC gamers looking to enhance their gaming experience. With expanded compatibility and support, FSR 3.1 is poised to become a key feature in future game releases, offering developers and players alike a powerful tool for improving visual fidelity and performance in gaming.
