As a tech reviewer with a decade of experience, I have had the opportunity to test and analyze various consumer tech products. Recently, the Humane AI Pin caught my attention, claiming to represent cutting-edge consumer technology. However, after delving into reviews and examining the pin myself, it became apparent that it fell short of expectations. The utilization of a Snapdragon processor from four years ago and a custom version of Android 12 left much to be desired. In essence, it seemed more like a midrange Android phone disguised as an AI wearable. This realization prompted me to experiment with turning a regular smartphone into an AI wearable device.

My initial prototype involved attaching a Motorola Razr Plus to the neckline of my shirt. However, I quickly encountered limitations, such as the inability to download the necessary AI assistant application from the Play Store on a folding phone. Furthermore, the practicality of using a voice assistant from the cover screen of a flip phone proved challenging. The subsequent experiment with ChatGPT in conversation mode on the Razr flip phone highlighted the limitations of the setup, emphasizing the need for a more efficient and functional AI gadget.

Dissatisfied with the limitations of foldable phones, I transitioned to a Pixel 8 and a Pixel Watch 2 setup, with Gemini set as the default assistant on the phone. Although this configuration showed promise, I encountered issues with seamless integration between the phone and the watch. However, leveraging wireless earbuds for AI assistance yielded more favorable results. Despite some shortcomings, such as interference from other devices and occasional limitations in functionality, the overall experience suggested that AI integration with existing devices like phones and earbuds could be a viable solution for enhanced productivity.

Reflecting on my experimentation with AI gadgets, it became evident that the future of AI wearables may not lie in separate dedicated devices but rather in the integration of AI capabilities into existing everyday devices like smartphones and earbuds. Phones, equipped with powerful processors and advanced connectivity features, already serve as capable platforms for AI interactions. While the concept of standalone AI gadgets may appeal to enthusiasts, the practicality and convenience of pairing AI functionalities with devices that users already carry and wear regularly present a compelling alternative.

The evolution of AI wearables is poised to leverage the existing capabilities of smartphones and accessories like earbuds, providing users with seamless and efficient AI interactions without the need for additional dedicated gadgets. While the allure of specialized AI hardware may persist, the practicality and widespread adoption of integrated AI solutions within everyday devices underscore the potential for a future where AI seamlessly integrates into our daily lives. As we navigate the landscape of AI wearables, the key may not lie in reinventing the wheel with standalone gadgets but rather in maximizing the potential of the devices we already rely on.
