Cities: Skylines 2, the popular citybuilder game, recently released a DLC called Beach Properties that has caused quite a stir among players. The player reception to this DLC has been far from positive, leading to both developers Colossal Order and publishers Paradox Interactive issuing a joint statement of apology. The letter, signed by Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen and Paradox Interactive deputy CEO Mattias Lilja, promises refunds to anyone who purchased Beach Properties. For those who acquired it through the Ultimate Edition of Skylines 2, compensation will be provided in the form of three Creator Packs and three radio stations. The developers acknowledge the disappointment expressed by the players and take responsibility for rushing out a DLC that should not have been released in its current state.

Beach Properties DLC was intended to be a significant addition to Skylines 2, marking a turning point for the game. However, it received criticism for its lack of substantial content. Despite its price tag of £8.49 / $10, the DLC offered minimal new features, consisting mainly of a few new buildings and foliage options. Surprisingly, there were no actual beach houses included in the pack. The release of mod tools alongside the DLC helped to soothe some of the backlash, but even these tools were deemed inadequate, lacking essential features like asset importing.

In their apology statement, the developers commit to making immediate and meaningful changes to their development approach and communication with the players. They vow to prioritize enhancing the base game and modding tools, pushing back the release of the Bridges and Ports expansion to 2025. Additionally, a meeting is planned where selected Cities enthusiasts will have the opportunity to provide feedback and suggestions for the game’s improvement. Despite these promises, some players remain skeptical based on previous unfulfilled commitments.

While the future of Cities: Skylines 2 may seem uncertain, there is still hope for the game to redeem itself in the eyes of its players. The developers’ acknowledgment of their missteps and dedication to making improvements signal a willingness to listen to feedback and prioritize player satisfaction. As the gaming community eagerly awaits the changes promised by Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive, there is a chance for Skylines 2 to regain the trust it has lost. It remains to be seen whether the developers can deliver on their commitments and steer the game in a positive direction.

The release of the Beach Properties DLC has highlighted the challenges faced by Cities: Skylines 2 and the need for transparency and responsiveness from its developers. By addressing the shortcomings of the current state of the game and taking actionable steps towards improvement, there is a possibility for a brighter future for Skylines 2. Players will be watching closely to see how the developers follow through on their promises and whether they can regain the trust and support of the community. Only time will tell if Cities: Skylines 2 can overcome its troubles and emerge stronger than ever.
