After five years of development, Peacock has decided to drop the Battlestar Galactica reboot. The show never received a formal order to series during its time at the streamer.

Universal Content Productions, the company behind the reboot, is now looking to shop the series around to other outlets. While Syfy, the channel that aired the 2003 Battlestar Galactica reboot, is a likely destination within the parent company Comcast, other major streamers could also express interest in the show.

Sam Esmail, best known for creating Mr. Robot, was the driving force behind the Battlestar Galactica reboot. The show was intended to stay within the continuity established by the 2003 miniseries and subsequent series. However, writer Michael Lesslie left the project in 2021, with Derek Simonds taking over as showrunner and writer in 2024.

The Legacy of Battlestar Galactica

The original Battlestar Galactica, created by Glen A. Larson in 1978, followed a fleet of survivors fleeing from the Cylons. The Battlestar Galactica ship protected the fleet as they searched for Earth. The sequel series, Galactica 1980, saw the fleet arriving on Earth in the present day.

Following the conclusion of the second Battlestar Galactica series, Syfy made several attempts to revive the franchise. The prequel show, Caprica, only lasted for one season, while Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, a web series, failed to become a full-fledged TV show. Additionally, a Battlestar Galactica movie helmed by Simon Kinberg was announced in 2020, but updates on the project have been scarce.

Despite its rich history and loyal fanbase, the Battlestar Galactica franchise seems to be facing uncertainty in the current landscape of television. With the recent setback at Peacock, the future of the reboot remains unclear. As fans eagerly await news of the show finding a new home, it’s evident that the journey of Battlestar Galactica is far from over.
