Recently, leaked images posted on X by @MysteryLupin have revealed some exciting updates coming to the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat. The leaked photos show not only the new thermostat itself but also new temperature sensors. Interestingly, the images also include other thermostats from Nest, such as the Nest E and the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen). However, the Nest Thermostat (2020) was notably missing from the pictures, possibly due to its lack of compatibility with Nest’s room sensors.
Design Changes and New Features
Upon closer inspection, it appears that the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat bears a striking resemblance to the third-generation model. However, there are some noticeable design changes, such as a more curved display while still retaining the physical dial. The display is likely to be a touchscreen, similar to the third-generation model, and the leaked image shows a new icon with three wavy lines. This new icon suggests that the thermostat will also function as an indoor air quality monitor, a feature that is new to Nest thermostats.
In addition to the leaked images, a screenshot of the Google Home app with a new Climate screen further supports the theory that the new Nest Learning Thermostat will monitor air quality. The screenshot displays an air quality index score, hinting at the thermostat’s expanded capabilities. Furthermore, the thermostat is expected to work seamlessly with the redesigned Nest Temperature Sensor (second-gen), which can be wall-mounted or placed on a table. The new sensors are rounder and squishier-looking, and according to reports, will be priced at $39 each or three for $99, with a three-year battery life.
According to FCC filings uncovered by 9to5Google, the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat may include Google’s Soli radar technology. The Soli radar can be used to activate the thermostat’s display when a user approaches it and can detect presence for Google’s Home & Away Routines. This feature would represent a significant technological advancement, as the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat relies on motion sensors instead of Soli radar.

As we eagerly await the official announcement of the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, it’s clear that Google is committed to innovation in smart home technology.
