AMD has recently announced the release of their new GPU, the Radeon RX 7600 XT, which boasts the capability to handle both 1080p and 1440p gaming. Priced at $329, this card is an upgrade from the previous Radeon RX 7600, which was specifically designed for 1080p gaming. Despite the increased memory of 16GB and improved clock speeds, is the RX 7600 XT really ready for 1440p gaming?
The Radeon RX 7600 XT comes with some impressive specifications on paper. With 32 compute units, 2048 stream processors, and a 128-bit memory bus, it seems to offer a substantial performance boost. Additionally, AMD has increased the base and boost clock speeds and the total board power to 190 watts, up from the previous 165 watts.
One surprising aspect of the RX 7600 XT is its 16GB of memory, which is double that of its predecessor. However, it falls short in comparison to the RX 7700 XT, which ships with 12GB of memory. This raises the question of whether AMD’s decision to equip the RX 7600 XT with 16GB of memory is truly necessary or if it is simply a marketing strategy.
AMD claims that the RX 7600 XT is “ready to take on 1440p” and should deliver 60fps and above in games like Starfield, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Watch Dogs: Legion, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and Forza Horizon 5. However, upon closer inspection of AMD’s own data, it becomes apparent that this card may still primarily be a 1080p card, with the ability to stretch to 1440p in certain games.
AMD has also provided data comparing the RX 6700 XT to Nvidia’s $299 RTX 4060. The data suggests that the RX 6700 XT performs competitively with the RTX 4060 at both 1080p and 1440p in a few selected games. However, a comprehensive review is needed to determine the true performance and capabilities of both cards.
While the Radeon RX 7600 XT shows some promising specifications, there are several aspects that raise doubts about its readiness for 1440p gaming. The decision to equip it with 16GB of memory, while admirable, may not be entirely necessary for optimal performance. Furthermore, AMD’s own data suggests that the RX 7600 XT is still primarily a 1080p card, despite its ability to handle certain games at 1440p. To truly determine the viability of this GPU for 1440p gaming, it would be wise to wait for comprehensive reviews that provide a more accurate assessment of its performance compared to other cards in the market.
