Smartphone cameras have come a long way in recent years, with manufacturers constantly striving to improve their imaging capabilities. One brand that understands the importance of lens quality is Vivo, and they have made lens improvements a major focus in their newest flagship smartphones: the Vivo X100 and Vivo X100 Pro. These devices were initially launched in China on November 13th and are now being released internationally. While the X100 will be available in Southeast Asian markets, including India and Indonesia, the higher-tier X100 Pro will also be available in European markets. Unfortunately, the United States will not be receiving either of these devices.

The Vivo X100 Pro features a remarkable 50-megapixel one-inch-type main camera, a significant improvement over previous smartphone standards. Vivo claims that this camera has been meticulously calibrated for “consistent sharpness and quality.” Additionally, the X100 Pro boasts a 50-megapixel telephoto camera with an impressive 4.3x optical magnification, as well as Zeiss’ APO designation, which helps reduce chromatic aberration. The inclusion of a floating lens element enables users to capture stunning close-up photographs with the telephoto lens.

On the other hand, the Vivo X100 offers a 50-megapixel 1/1.49-inch-type main camera sensor and a 64-megapixel 3x optical telephoto lens. Although it lacks a floating element, Zeiss coatings have been applied to the lenses on both devices. Both phones also feature 50-megapixel ultrawide cameras and a secondary imaging chip. However, the X100 Pro utilizes the latest V3 chip, enabling the capture of 4K cinematic portrait videos.

Powerful Chipset and Impressive Display

Both the Vivo X100 and X100 Pro are built on MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300 flagship chipset. This powerful chipset ensures smooth performance and efficient multitasking capabilities. Furthermore, Vivo has not compromised on the display quality for the “lesser” model. Both smartphones boast a large 6.78-inch OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, providing users with vibrant and fluid visuals. Additionally, both devices have an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, adding to their overall durability and reliability.

Vivo’s previous flagship, the X90 Pro, showed promise in terms of camera performance. However, there were instances of lens aberrations that affected the quality of the images. With the X100 Pro, Vivo seems to be doubling down on lens quality, which is a positive development. However, it remains to be seen how it will fare against competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, which is expected to release soon. Samsung has consistently prioritized higher megapixel counts and computational processing, which has proven advantageous in various scenarios. It will be interesting to see how Vivo’s lens-focused approach stands up to Samsung’s approach.

Pricing

While Vivo has not provided European pricing information, they have revealed that the X100 Pro will retail for approximately €937 or $1,024 in Hong Kong. On the other hand, the non-Pro X100 will be priced at around $768 or €702. These prices indicate that Vivo is positioning the X100 Pro as a premium offering, likely targeting photography enthusiasts and professionals.

Vivo’s new flagship smartphones, the Vivo X100 and Vivo X100 Pro, prioritize lens quality to deliver exceptional camera performance. These devices offer impressive improvements in terms of megapixel count, telephoto capabilities, and the reduction of lens aberrations. Coupled with a powerful MediaTek chipset and a stunning OLED display, Vivo’s latest offerings are sure to capture the attention of smartphone photography enthusiasts.
