Fans of the chilly survival citybuilder game Frostpunk have been eagerly anticipating the release of Frostpunk 2 on July 25th. However, for those who can’t wait that long to experience the freezing cold world of Frostpunk 2, there is good news. A beta version of the game is set to be released later this month, playable between April 15th and the 22nd. The catch? You’ll need to pre-order the digital deluxe edition to gain access to the beta.

According to 11bit’s announcement, the beta version will include a “part of the sandbox mode called the Utopia Builder Preview”. This preview will only be available in English and Simplified Chinese, rather than the full range of languages that will be available in the final release. The focus of Frostpunk 2 is on “social survival”, with players having to navigate issues such as heat, power, and starvation while also dealing with the tensions and conflicts within the city. Unlike in the first Frostpunk game, players will now have to navigate the complexities of democracy, as they must pass laws that address broader issues and tensions within the city.

One of the most significant changes in Frostpunk 2 is the introduction of the Council Hall, described as “the most important special building” in the game. In order to address issues of equality and city governance, players must visit the Council Hall to make important decisions that will impact the future of the city. The days of making decisions solely for the survival of the people are over, as now the citizens expect to have a say in how the city is run and what rules are in place.

While the opportunity to play the beta version of Frostpunk 2 is exciting, there are some considerations for players. In order to access the beta, players will need to pre-order the digital deluxe edition of the game, which comes at a price of £56.69/$67.49/€67.49. This may be a significant investment for a game that is still in the beta stage and has the potential to change before its official release. Additionally, Frostpunk 2 will be available on Game Pass on day one, so players may want to weigh their options before pre-ordering.
