Naughty Dog’s co-president, Neil Druckmann, has recently sparked discussions about the potential for a third installment in The Last of Us series. While this doesn’t confirm the development of a new game, it does leave fans wondering if there is more to the story. Druckmann, in a Making-Of feature, explained his concept for The Last of Us: Part 3, which builds on the themes of parental love and “justice at any cost” from the previous games. Although Naughty Dog doesn’t feel obligated to continue the tale, Druckmann believes that there may be one more chapter to explore.

Unconditional Love and Pursuit of Justice

In the two-hour-long video, Druckmann reflects on the clean and powerful concept of parental love portrayed in the first game. He also highlights the second game’s theme of seeking justice for loved ones, even at great personal cost. These themes have resonated with players and provided a throughline for the series. Druckmann acknowledges that if Naughty Dog never gets to create another game, the story could be seen as complete. However, he teases a new concept that excites him and could potentially serve as a foundation for a third chapter.

Privileged Creative Freedom

One of the strengths of working at Naughty Dog, as Druckmann explains, is the artistic freedom the studio enjoys. While the team would love to create another Last of Us game, they don’t feel bound by it. If the developers find another project they are passionate about, Naughty Dog would fully support their endeavors. This privilege allows Druckmann the freedom to explore new ideas and concepts. For years, he has been searching for the right concept for The Last of Us: Part 3, and recently, he has discovered something that excites him and could potentially continue the story in a meaningful way.

During the Making-Of, Druckmann also addresses a misconception that arose from a previous interview. He clarifies that a story involving Joel Miller’s brother Tommy, set after the events of The Last of Us Part 2, was never intended to be The Last of Us Part 3. It was a smaller-scale story that had higher priorities at Naughty Dog at the time and thus was put on hold. However, Druckmann still believes that this story will see the light of day, either as a game or a show, at some point in the future.

Considering Different Mediums

Fans are left wondering what form this potential Tommy story could take. Could it be a standalone spin-off like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy? Or perhaps it could be another season of the highly anticipated The Last of Us HBO adaptation? The possibilities are endless, and Naughty Dog has a track record of successfully expanding the universe of their beloved franchises.

Naughty Dog’s recent cancellation of The Last of Us Online, a multiplayer live service offering, further emphasizes their commitment to single-player narrative games. This decision allows them to prioritize storytelling and maintain the high quality that defines their heritage. While a PC port of The Last of Us Part 2 seems likely, Naughty Dog’s current focus seems to be on crafting compelling narratives rather than branching out into multiplayer experiences.

The Timeliness of a New Story

The potential for a new Last of Us story comes at an interesting time. It’s important to note that the themes explored in The Last of Us Part 2, such as “justice at any cost,” are not direct allegories or commentaries. However, these themes stem from Druckmann’s personal experiences growing up in Israel and his reflections on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Given the recent events in the region, it adds another layer of complexity to the potential narrative of The Last of Us: Part 3. As with the previous games, Naughty Dog has demonstrated a willingness to tackle challenging and thought-provoking subject matter.

While Naughty Dog has not confirmed the development of The Last of Us: Part 3, Neil Druckmann’s concept hints at a possible continuation of the series. The combination of powerful themes, creative freedom, and the potential for exploring new mediums leaves fans eagerly awaiting what Naughty Dog has in store for the future of The Last of Us franchise.
