As the launch of AMD’s highly anticipated 8000-series desktop APUs approaches, excitement and speculation continue to build. With motherboard BIOS’ ready and samples already circulating, leaks about the potential gaming performance of these APUs are beginning to emerge. While the actual gaming performance is still partly unknown, a recent set of Geekbench entries featuring the Ryzen 5 8600G and the Ryzen 7 8700G has given us a glimpse into what we can expect from these new APUs.
The Geekbench entries revealed that the Radeon 760M integrated graphics of the Ryzen 5 8600G scored 30,770 and 24,842 in the Vulkan and OpenCL benchmarks respectively. Notably, the Vulkan score surpassed the popular Nvidia GTX 1060. Although the performance may not be as impressive compared to current generation mid-range discrete graphics cards, it is a significant achievement for an integrated solution. With its lower power consumption, the 760M should be more than capable of running modern games at 1080p, as long as the settings are adjusted accordingly.
Moving on to the Ryzen 7 8700G, its Radeon 780M graphics delivered even higher scores of 35,427 and 29,244 in the Vulkan and OpenCL benchmarks respectively. This places it on a similar level as the GTX 1650, which is indeed an impressive feat. However, it is important to note that synthetic results do not always accurately reflect real-world gaming performance. The speed of the memory, in particular, plays a significant role in determining the actual gaming capabilities of integrated graphics.
Both the 8600G and 8700G APUs are based on the RDNA 3 architecture, which represents a significant leap forward from the Vega based integrated graphics found in the 5000-series APUs. This architectural improvement suggests that the new chips will offer significantly higher performance than their predecessors. Moreover, the 8600G features six Zen 4 cores, while the 8700G boasts eight. On paper, this positions both APUs as versatile and capable all-rounders.
The imminent announcement of the 8600G and 8700G at CES is eagerly awaited by gamers and tech enthusiasts alike. However, it is worth noting that cheaper models are also expected to be announced, providing even more options for those on a tighter budget. While these budget-friendly models may not offer the same level of gaming performance as their higher-end counterparts, they may still provide a compelling solution for gamers who cannot afford or prioritize a discrete graphics card at the moment.
